Experiments in Happiness: The Setup
Recap: My New Year's resolution is to stop externalizing my happiness. This year, I'm focusing on my own behaviors and thought processes and experimenting with altering them -- one per month -- in order to become a more self-aware, self-assured person. You can also read the whole series on my blog, This Millennial Life.January: No alcohol.Yes, yes -- it's been less than two weeks, but I've been thinking more about the parameters of my yearlong project and decided further explanation was in order before diving into any "results."
I realize that I can't really have an experiment without qualifying or quantifying certain factors -- specifically, the factors I'm looking to strengthen or change. And while it's hard to make definitive assessments of, say, self-esteem, there are some correlating, more easily evaluated indicators.
I anticipate that anything I'll be attempting will affect one of three categories -- Body, Mind, and Creative -- and within those categories, the needle will move on certain benchmark factors. Some experiments won't apply to some or even most of these criteria, but it's a handy way to visualize and track progress -- or regress.
BodyThe classic -- and safe -- New Year's resolution category. The little black dress of self-improvement. Any changes I make to my body, diet, or exercise -- including teetotaling for January -- falls into this category. I predict experiments that affect this category will primarily make changes to my:
- Energy: Can I wake up in the mornings without punching someone? Can I stay awake without someone punching me? How many cups of free office coffee is too many cups of free office coffee?
- Activity: How often am I exercising? How does it make me feel? (Spoiler alert: The answers are "not enough" and "mad and sweaty.")
- Health: How well am I staving off the fourteen kazillion germs I encounter every day on the New York City public transit system? Is the dry patch on my mouth that appears in the same spot every winter actually lip cancer like I've secretly suspected for years?
- Weight: Pretty sure I will regret tracking this. Look: This is not now and will not ever be a weight loss blog. I'm plagued by the same crippling body image issues that torture every healthy American woman who's not in utero, but I'm not publishing my weight for the ever-compassionate citizens of the internet so that I can get snatched. I'm keeping track of it, and sharing it, because it's a tangible way to measure changes in my body from month to month.
MindAll the "self-"s: Self-esteem, self-worth, self-actualization, self-loathing, selfies. I'll also lump all sorts of fears, anxieties, and resentments together here as well. Changes made in the Body category may very well also affect the factors below. Each month I'll evaluate my:
- Stress: How anxious and afraid do I generally feel? How long does it take me to fall asleep at night because I didn't start contributing to a 401(k) until 6 months ago and I'm pretty sure that means I'll die penniless?
- Savings: How much money am I able to save each month? Ok, so I understand that money is not an imaginary concept in my head, though if you looked at my bank account, it might as well be! Har har har! (Shoot me.) I'm including saving money here in the "mind" category because how much money I make/save has the most direct effect on my mental state, which is to say, usually deleterious.
- Contentment: I feel evaluating my happiness on a monthly basis would lead to existential meltdown, so I've knocked it down to contentment. How satisfied/dissatisfied with my general situation do I feel? How much do I want to change something about my circumstances that I feel like I can't?
- Presence: Hoo boy, do I struggle with this. I permanently live six months to a year in the future unless I forcibly restrain myself, and it contributes to a whole lot of frustration and anxiety in my life. A big motivation for me to do this project was the necessity of examining my "State of the Union" in the present rather than rabidly preparing for the future.
CreativeAnything that Oprah or bloggers with all-white living rooms would call "feeding your soul." I'm a sucker for arts and crafts, and I can easily fall into a Pinterest black hole looking at DIY projects and never doing them. I also work on theater projects as a dramaturg and writer. So basically anything I end up making or writing affects the following:
- Fulfillment: How artistically fulfilled do I feel? A broad question, to be sure, but definitely something that fluctuates. How satisfied am I with what I'm creating and how much time I have available to create it?
- Production: Feelings are one thing, but what am I actually making or doing? Did I write a new song with my writing partner? Did I work on a show? Did I make a coat rack out of toilet paper tubes? Did I submit to a playwriting contest? Basically, what are the tangible fruits of my creativity?
- Doubt: If you don't know the song "Die, Vampire, Die!" from the musical [title of show], go listen to it, and then you'll understand exactly what this category is about.
- Motivation/Discipline: How regimented and self-motivated am I being each month, and what's getting in my way? Also a big one for me. I have so many ideas and I'm so bad at getting them started. And I'm even worse at finishing them. I am a lazy, lazy artist.
So all in all, that's 12 different "inputs" that I'll look at each month to try to determine how a given experiment is affecting me -- or not affecting me. And if there are other, more significant happenings that contribute, I'll be sure to write about those as well.
Hopefully, this structure makes sense and will frame the rest of my posts, and if it doesn't, well... At least we wasted this time together.

Woman Who Won $112 Million Using Law of Attraction Is Giving Back
Cynthia Stafford is an avid reader who believes in the power of the mind. In 2007, she decided that she wanted to win $112 million. Following the advise of author Joseph Murphy, Stafford wrote the figure “$112 million” over and over again. She meditated on the figure and visualized what her life would be like after winning. After four months of visualizing a lottery win and what she would do with the winnings, Stafford won the California Mega Millions jackpot in May 2007. The amount she won was $112 million – exactly what she had envisioned. Stafford believes the key to her big win was that she created a written plan and visualized what her world would be like if she had already won.
Stafford followed the advise of author Joseph Murphy, who said, “Live in the emboidiment of your desire, and your thought and feeling will soon be manifest.” That is a fundamental principal of the Law of Attraction: feel the feeling of your desire already attained. Neville said it best:
“You must assume the feeling of the wish fulfilled until your assumption has all the sensory vividness of reality. You must imagine that you are already experiencing what you desire. That is, you must assume the feeling of the fulfillment of your desire until you are possessed by it and this feeling crowds all other ideas out of your consciousness.” – Neville Goddard
After winning the $112 million, Stafford began giving a lot of it away. After donating $1 million to the Geffen Playhouse to fund an art program for children, she is becoming known as one of the biggest philanthropists in Los Angeles.
Open Your Third Eye and Awaken Your Pineal Gland With These Simple Exercises (This Really Works!)
I tried the Awakening I exercise last night, honestly not expecting much. But wow does this work. About three minutes after completing the exercise, my forehead began to tingle, and suddenly I felt a rapid sense of expansion in the middle of my brain (where the pineal gland is located), along with an uplifted and expanded state of consciousness bordering on a mild and pleasant pyschedelic experience. AWAKENING I:
Please read all of the following;
If you wish to perform this exercise, you need to understand what you will be doing. It is important to follow the instructions as this is somewhat advanced:
The Third Eye is directly related to the 6th chakra — the psychic chakra, located on the middle of the forehead above the brows. It is closely associated with the “pineal” gland. The pineal gland is dormant in most people, as is the true Third Eye.
French Philosopher Rene Descartes believed the pineal gland to be “the seat of the soul” where mind and body met.
In the average person, the pineal gland is atrophied, [calcified] and dormant. The following exercise will change that.
Please read this thoroughly, as much of the exercises I write of are very advanced and can cause problems if one does not do them correctly.

The pineal gland is like a pea in size; like a shriveled raisin in most people where it remains dormant.

Opening the pineal gland/3rd eye:
This is done with a specific tone and chant. You only need to do this exercise for 3 days, afterwards, it is permanent.
The mantra to be used is “Thoh,” pronounced “TOE.”
It must be within the correct vibration.
Not deep, not high pitched, inbetween, like alto range.
You will feel it when you hit the correct tone. So play around and don’t second guess yourself. When you think you’ve got it, you probably do.
1. Sit with your back straight.
2. Breathe in through your nose and hold your breath as long as is comfortable.
Open your jaws so there is a small space between your top and bottom teeth.
Place the tip of your tongue between the space of your slightly parted teeth.
3. Put a very light pressure onto the tongue with your teeth.
This is like the same process of saying the “TH” part of the English word “the.”
Once your tongue is in position, release your breath slowly through your mouth, saying T-H-H-O-H-H in one long exhale.
Say the word one time per exhale. Your tongue will be vibrating between your teeth.
You should feel the air moving past your tongue and teeth.
If this technique is done properly, you will feel a pressure or sensation in your jaw and cheeks. The tone will also vibrate in your third eye.
It may take a few seconds to adjust this, don’t worry, just keep going.
4. Do the above 5 times in a row.
5. It is very important the above exercise be done for 3 consecutive days, 24 hours apart. Then it is a done deal.

WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT:
1. One of the first experiences is a headache or pressure in the center of the forehead. This sensation may also feel like it is originating from within, usually an inch or more beneath the surface of the forehead. This is a positive indication the pineal gland is awakening and beginning to function in a healthy manner.
*Some people can experience a migrane lasting several hours, so to be safe it is recommended that you try this in the evening when you do not have work to do. The severity of the side effects will depend on how atrophied/calcified your pineal gland is to begin with.
2. After the occurence of headache or pressure in the forehead, you may wake up one morning with a throbbing or tingling sensation in your forehead; it may feel like a goosebump.
The feeling may be very intense, like something is there. The sensation of pulsing or throbbing will continue throughout the day, and you may “hear” sounds coming from within your head, such as light popping or crackling sensations.
These are the final phisiological events you may experience after opening up your third eye.
It indicates your pineal gland is awakened, functioning and alive.

PSYCHIC EFFECTS:
You may experience any or all of these to varying degrees:
- Faster, easier learning and retention
- Marked increase in intuition
- Increased creativity
- Psychic gifts develop and become markedly stronger, along with more developed ability to see or sense human auras

- Clairaudience (psychic hearing) opens up

This is a very powerful exercise, and as with all powerful practices, your body may go through discomfort in order to adapt.
CLN Editor’s Note: I have taken considerable steps over the past few years to awaken and decalcify my pineal gland, and as such, I experienced no side effects other than an intense but not-uncomfortable feeling of pressure in my forehead and third eye that was just shy of a headache. So not everyone will experience side effects.

AWAKENING II
In order for this to work properly, you must have already performed the Awakening I exercise.
I included this above for those who are new.
It is very important to wait for 10-14 days following Awakening I, before you go onto Awakening II, otherwise the exercises won’t be effective. Your body needs time to adapt and get the energy flow going.
This exercise is completely euphoric and intensley pleasurable. Unlike Awakening I, this should be done once a week, and given the blissful effects that are lasting when done correctly, most people will enjoy doing so.
Breath in deeply and hold your breath for a count of five.
Repeat this three times.
This helps you to be relaxed and focused.
Now focus all of your attention upon your third eye.
You should begin to feel a sensation similar to the effects of the Awakening I exercise — a slight pressure or awareness of the spot of your third eye.
Now, take a deep breath as you did for the Awakening I exercise.
Hold it for as long as comfortable — do not push this — and release your breath, vibrating the word “MAY.” This is pronounced like the English language word for the month of May.
It should all come out at one time- M-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-ay, gradually and slowly.
It is ok to adjust your pitch. The tone should be alto.
Breath in again, and repeat this five times.
You need to hit a certain pitch. You will know when you do, for you will feel this in your head. Do the best you can.
Now, THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT:
When vibrating the word “MAY,” feel the energy going into your head,
first into your third eye area,
then into the middle of your brain,
and then to the top of your head where your crown chakra is located.

REMEMBER: Concentrate on your forehead (third eye area),

This is done for the duration of each chant.
1. Breath in.
2. Begin to exhale, vibrating “MAY.”
3. Concentrate on your third eye.
4. Concentrate on the middle of your brain.
5. Concentrate on the top of your head and finish exhaling the vibration.
Repeat four more times.
The effects of this exercise are extremely pleasurable.
A feeling of lightnesss can occur immediately following the exercise.
Some people may feel energy or tingling inside their heads, or completely covering their heads; a slight presure in the crown area and intense euphoria is also common.
The blissful state can occur hours and even days later.
This will eventually become permanent and will greatly assist in void meditation, clairvoyance, and the development of other psychic and paranormal senses.
Self realization through God realization
Few days back, I read the article “Universal Brotherhood – Through God Realization” in a Spiritual Magazine. On going through it, I found how beautifully and effectively the writer has come up with the problem and then the solution. To summarize, the saint pegs the cause the problem of our suffering as the pluralization of God by us humans ourselves. Agreeing with her point of view wholeheartedly, I would like to take the discussion a step further. I feel that one of the root causes of the problem with us is our tendency to ascertain ourselves as physical bodies whereas we are only and only soul. It is unfortunate that we are always physically conscious and hardly ever try to be soul conscious. It is because we treat ourselves a physical body, we also assume that our Father must also be in physical shape and we form His image like this. Almighty God, Father is actually inNiraakar i.e. formless. To assume Niraakar in physical shape is the main problem and from here the God pluralization starts.
When we say we are “self-confident” or “self-conscious”, then we must know the “self” before becoming so. We must have the knowledge of this self; and to know self, we must first be aware of our father Niraakar, Formless One who is always in peace and bliss. In fact, there is no need for us to beg for peace because we are children of God who is Ocean of peace and bliss. It is when we disconnect ourselves with this Almighty Source, than the problem arises. In order to ensure that this connection remains alive at all times, there is always a need for Saakar, Satguru. God Almighty is aware that we the simple-minded folk find it difficult to worship Him in the Niraakar form and it is to make it easy for us to worship that He takes physical form in every era.

सकारात्मकता (Positivity) की शुरुआत आशा और विश्वास से होती है| किसी जगह पर चारों ओर अँधेरा है और कुछ भी दिखाई नहीं दे रहा और वहां पर अगर हम एक छोटा सा दीपक जला देंगे तो उस दीपक में इतनी शक्ति है कि वह छोटा सा दीपक चारों ओर फैले अँधेरे को एक पल में दूर कर देगा| इसी तरह आशा की एक किरण सारे नकारात्मक विचारों को एक पल में मिटा सकती है|
नकारात्मकता को नकारात्मकता समाप्त नहीं कर सकती, नकारात्मकता को तो केवल सकारात्मकता ही समाप्त कर सकती है| इसीलिए जब भी कोई छोटा सा नकारात्मक विचार मन में आये उसे उसी पल सकारात्मक विचार में बदल देना चाहिए|
उदाहरण के लिए अगर किसी विद्यार्थी को परीक्षा से 20 दिन पहले अचानक ही यह विचार आता है कि वह इस बार परीक्षा (Exam) में उत्तीर्ण नहीं हो पाएगा तो उसके पास दो विकल्प है – या तो वह इस विचार को बार-बार दोहराए और धीरे-धीरे नकारात्मक पौधे को एक पेड़ बना दे या फिर उसी पल इस नेगेटिव विचार को पॉजिटिव विचार में बदल दे और सोचे कि कोई बात नहीं अभी भी परीक्षा में 20 दिन यानि 480 घंटे बाकि है और उसमें से वह 240 घंटे पूरे दृढ़ विश्वास के साथ मेहनत करेगा तो उसे उत्तीर्ण होने से कोई रोक नहीं सकता| अगर वह नेगेटिव विचार को सकारात्मक विचार में उसी पल बदल दे और अपने पॉजिटिव संकल्प को याद रखे तो निश्चित ही वह उत्तीर्ण होगा|
